Why I should integrate ICTs
Why and What?:
For
my professional experience my teaching context is grade 1 in ICT and mathematics. The school in which I have taught is Drayton State School. At that
time I worked in a prep class and within that class, ICT was integrated throughout many subjects. The interactive whiteboard was the main piece of
technology used for Mathematics and Literacy.
The reason that I would integrate ICT into the classroom would be to engage students in alternative teaching practice and to keep students up to date with the fast rising technology of today. By introducing technology into the year 1 classroom it engages the students in different teaching methods and shows them a more exciting visual and hands on approach to teaching and learning. Focusing on using mathematics for the integration of ICT is a great example of how the
students can be involved with the interactive whiteboard. They have the opportunity to complete games and activities suited to their level of ability.
Younger students can often be disengaged when learning if they are not able to be physically involved in the lesson. By using technology they will be involved
and excited about what they are learning and how they are learning. It provides them with more of an opportunity to be engaged and focus on what their
learning. The Melbourne Declaration on the Educational Goals for Young Australians (MCEETYA 2008) recognises that in a digital age, and with rapid and continuing changes in the ways that people share, use, develop and communicate with ICT, young people need to be highly skilled in its use.(Australian and Curriculum reporting and assessing, 2013).
With children and adults not knowing or understanding the changes in technology they could easily be left behind, that is why teaching
teachers how to use ICT properly and without delay is important. Technology is changing at a rapid pace and as teachers we need to up skill so we can continue to integrate ICT into our classroom and continue to engage students at a high level to ensure they get the best out of their education. The main ICT resources that year 1 teachers can use in their classroom to teach students effectively are shown in Activities one, two and three.
